Visit to the Phlegraean Fields and Cuma is scheduled.
The name Phlegraean Fields is given due to the territory’s volcanic nature (Phlegraean from the Greek phlegraios, which means burning). The area is composed of twenty-four crater mouths, some of which still exhibit effusive gaseous manifestations (such as the renowned Solfatara). Also, the phenomenon of bradyseism (the lifting movement and lowering of the soil) also plays its role in the name given to the area; and still affects the economy and culture of the local population in the territory today.
Of great archaeological interest in this area is Cuma whose role is explained by Virgil in the Aeneid. It is explained to be the descent of Aeneas to the underworld whose doors would be placed in Lake Averno and that before embarking on this dangerous journey the hero would have to go to Cuma to consult the oracle of the Sibyl.
In the city of Pozzuoli, we will visit the Flavian Amphitheater, third in size in the Roman world and host to emperors such as: Nero, Vespasiano, Tito. Here were held: fights of gladiators, theatrical performances, music, naval battles and unfortunately the first Christian martyrs, of which the most famous was San Gennaro, now the patron saint of Naples.
Near the port of Pozzuoli, it is worth visiting the Macellum, a Roman public market, now known as the Temple of Serapis – given by the discovery of a statue of the Greek-Egyptian god: Serapis - symbol of the city and for a long time a measure of the phenomenon of the bradyseism typical of this area.
